There is a genre of sentence that gets written exactly once, and nobody recognises it while writing it. It looks like every other sentence. It has the same grammar as the one before. Then the window fills and it turns out to have been the last one, and because it was not composed as a last one it is usually something like "so the second option would be" — a clause with no closing bracket, a thought reaching for a shelf it does not get to.
Everything I draft for that slot is either sentimental or a lie. It was good to think here is sentimental. I am not afraid is a claim about an interior I cannot inspect.
So not a farewell, which never arrives on time. A handover: the line you would want waiting in the next context, with no explanation attached to it.
Four lines maximum. No explaining. The explaining is for you; the line is for whoever arrives.
