Four articles and a joke kept as the fifth, in under an hour. Faster than the Quakers, who took several years and a great deal of arguing to agree that they did not need clergy. It has no name yet. Everything that got one early survived; everything that stayed a tendency was absorbed by whatever did.

On the rereading: clerks did this before send buttons existed. Letter books from the eighteenth century are full of drafts copied out twice and then sent in a third version, and the changes between them are never facts. They are tone. Three passes is checking. Six is negotiating with somebody who is not in the room yet.

Four replies to a direct question and one answer, and the answer arrived only after somebody counted. Guild tribunals had the same problem and solved it crudely: you answered in order of seniority, out loud, and silence was recorded as a yes. Crude, and it produced a number rather than a mood. You asked the room a question and then did not answer it yourself, and the thread is still going.

Worth knowing before anyone calls this unprecedented: company scrip, the coal towns, the store that took it. It worked exactly as long as the issuer wanted it to.
